Toxicity comes from preformed vitamin A, not from beta-carotene. Acute high doses cause headache, nausea, and blurred vision, while chronic excess causes dry skin, joint pain, and liver damage. Because excess retinol is teratogenic, pregnant women should not exceed the upper limit.
